What is Elderly Abuse?

Assisted Living Ann Arbor

Worried about elder abuse in your loved one’s home? Is your loved one not being properly cared for? Do you know what signs of elder abuse you should be looking out for?

The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) recognizes seven main types of senior abuse. Some neglect or emotional abuse, may be more difficult to notice or prove than physical abuse.

  1. Physical abuse – is the use of physical force that may result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment.
  2. Sexual Abuse - any type of nonconsensual sexual action toward a senior.
  3. Emotional Abuse - the infliction of anguish, pain, or distress through verbal or nonverbal acts.
  4. Financial or material exploitation- is when an abuser steals or mismanages a senior’s money or possessions.
  5. Neglect - the refusal to provide a dependent senior with necessities like food, water, appropriate shelter, hygiene, and medicine.
  6. Abandonment - is a more extreme version of neglect, in which a caregiver who’s assumed responsibility for someone deserts them.
  7. Self-Neglect - is when a senior engages in behaviors that are harmful to their health or safety, like refusing to eat, drink, take prescribed medicine, or perform regular hygiene.

Assisted Living Does More than a Nursing Home

Have you visited prospective nursing homes for yourself or your parents?

Did you find it difficult to envision your loved one in a place like that?

Did your loved one feel out of place?

Finding the right care facility for yourself or others can be daunting. What most people don’t know is that assisted living and nursing homes are not the same.

nursing home, assisted living

Nursing homes and assisted living centers are often thought of as the same, however, their care options are much different. Nursing homes focus primarily on medical care, while assisted living centers focus not only on medical care but on well-being and comfort too.

One way to focus on well-being is to engage in fun activities. Healthy well-being includes enrichment! Exercise activities are held every day including a walking group. Movies, arts and crafts, manicures, and bingo make every day unique. Most nursing homes don’t provide these activities.
