Overcoming Guilt When Moving a Parent to Assisted Living

assisted living Ann Arbor

Making the decision to move your parent into an assisted living community is never easy. It often comes with a mix of emotions, including sadness, anxiety, and guilt. Many adult children struggle with the feeling that they’re abandoning their loved ones. It’s essential to recognize that choosing assisted living in Ann Arbor or any other location is often the best option for ensuring the safety, well-being, and quality of life of your aging parents.

Acknowledge and Accept Your Feelings

Instead of suppressing the feelings of guilt, acknowledge them. Understand that guilt often stems from societal expectations or personal promises made in the past. Recognizing these feelings can help you process them in a healthy manner and allow you to focus on what’s best for your parent.

Focus on the Benefits for Your Parent

Assisted living communities provide a level of care that is difficult to maintain at home. From daily assistance with tasks to social engagement and medical support, your parent will likely enjoy a safer and more fulfilling lifestyle.

By focusing on these benefits, you can reframe your perspective and feel more confident in your decision. Remember, prioritizing your parent’s well-being is an act of love.

Communicating with Compassion - Navigating Difficult Conversations

elderly care Ann Arbor

One of the most challenging aspects of transitioning your elderly parent to assisted living or another care setting is the conversation itself. How do you convey your concerns and intentions with sensitivity and compassion?

We believe that open and honest communication is paramount. Here are some tips to help you navigate these difficult conversations:

  • Choose the Right Time and Place: Create a calm, private environment where your parent feels safe and heard.
  • Lead with Empathy: Acknowledge their fears and concerns. Avoid blaming or minimizing their feelings.
  • Focus on Their Well-being: Emphasize that the goal is to provide them with the best possible care, which may require professional assistance.
  • Listen Actively: Allow your parent to express their emotions without interruption.
  • Involve Professionals: If necessary, a geriatric care manager or therapist can facilitate difficult conversations.

Remember, communication is a process, not a one-time event. Be patient and persistent. Hillside Terrace, a leader in "Elderly Care Ann Arbor" is here to help guide you through this process.

Recognizing the Shift - When Caregiving Becomes Too Much

Elderly Care Ann Arbor

Caring for an aging parent is a journey of unwavering love and dedication. But what happens when that journey reaches a crossroads? When the weight of responsibility becomes overwhelming, and you realize you can no longer provide the level of care your parent deserves?

We understand this deeply emotional transition. It's not simply about feeling "burned out." It's about recognizing a fundamental shift in your parent's needs and your own capacity. It's about asking yourself the tough questions:

  • Has my parent's health changed dramatically? Are their needs exceeding my ability to provide safe, effective care?
  • Am I sacrificing my own well-being? Are my health, relationships, or career suffering?
  • Is my parent truly thriving under my care? Or are they merely existing?

Acknowledging this shift is not a sign of weakness, but a courageous act of love. It opens the door to finding solutions that prioritize your parent's well-being. If you are looking into "Elderly Care Ann Arbor" options, know you are not alone in this journey.

How Important is Hydration As We Age?

Wondering if you should up your water dosage as you’re getting older? Need motivation to stay hydrated? Curious how hydration needs change as you age?

Hydration is important at any age and is crucial to anyone’s overall health. However, there are some key factors that make hydration more important and tricky as we age, including:
memory care Ann Arbor

  1. Water Loss: as we get older, we lose water more quickly, making frequent hydration more important now, then 10 or 20 years ago.
  2. Decreased Sensitivity: many seniors may not realize they’re less sensitive to their bodies’ needs and may not feel parched until dehydration has already set in. Drinking water regularly can combat this issue.
  3. Mobility Changes: limits in mobility can make getting a glass of water a hassle; having a reusable bottle of water with you can alleviate the burden. If a trip to the restroom is a bit of workout, drinking your fill of water is less rewarding. To address this, make changes to your home for bathroom accessibility.
  4. Memory Trouble: even in our younger years we can get to the end of a day and realize we’ve forgotten to eat or drink anything! Now that we’re older, memory can be a bigger issue. If you often forget to drink water during the day, put yourself on a simple schedule, like drinking water at the beginning of each hour or having a glass before and after every meal.

Dehydration can range from mild to severe, just like your symptoms which can include headaches, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, and confusion. Chronic dehydration can damage the brain and kidneys, leading to irreversible problems.

Because dehydration is not just a matter of comfort but can be fatal, it’s important to remember your water today and everyday!

Here are a few tips for easier hydration:

  • Carry a reusable water bottle.
  • Eat fruits and veggies with high water content, like apple and cucumber.
  • Avoid salt and caffeine.
  • Drink water before, during, and after a workout, including walks or a round of golf.
  • Maximize your accessibility to a restroom at home.

Learn more about the importance of hydration for seniors and senior care and give us a call. As experts in senior living and memory care in Ann Arbor, Hillside Terrace is ready to serve you. And remember, at Hillside Terrace, our family shares life with your family.

The Power of Laughter for Senior Health

Looking for an easy way to boost your health and happiness during the senior years of your life? Caring for a senior family member or friend who has been a little less than perky lately?

You’ve heard it before and we’ll say it again: laughter is the best medicine! Well, as far as non-medicine medicines go. There’s no replacing blood pressure prescriptions if that’s something your doctor has assessed you need, but the powerful medicine of laughter can do wonders for our health.

Read a list of the amazing benefits of laughter!

    elderly care ann arbor
  1. Studies show that taking a break to laugh can improve your short-term memory performance by 40%. That’s a big deal as we start to get older.
  2. Laughing significantly reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which is linked to cardiovascular disease.
  3. A good laugh relaxes the entire body and can alleviate muscle tension and stress.
  4. Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer lessening the aches and pains common with old age for up to two hours.
  5. A healthy chuckle reduces blood pressure and improves circulation and oxygenation.
  6. Laughing regularly boosts the immune system and the body’s ability to fight disease and infection.
  7. Laughter reduces stress, anxiety, and depression while increasing levels of dopamine in the body.
  8. Laughing exercises the muscles of the core which are crucial for breathing, posture, and mobility.
Each of these benefits happen immediately and as a direct result of laughing. The long-term and greater psychological benefits of laughing and humor are far too many to count here!

To add some laughter into your day, choose comedies over dramas, get everyone to tell a joke or funny story at dinner, or subscribe to a joke of the day email and share it with friends.

If you have questions about the power of laughter or providing elderly care in Ann Arbor, please give us a call. We’re confident you’ll see the difference in quality of care when our family shares life with yours. Schedule a tour of our facilities today.

How to Tell the Difference Between Normal Forgetfulness & Dementia!

Aging is a part of life, there’s no doubt about it! But, is forgetfulness normal?

Is it normal to forget the little things as we age? Whether you forget an appointment, forget to pay a bill, or walk into a room and forget why you’re there, is that normal?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a person has problems with memory or another core brain function. These problems are severe enough to be noticeable to other people and show up on tests of mental function, but not serious enough to interfere with daily life.
memory care ann arbor

People with MCI have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the near future, especially when their main problem involves memory. However, not everyone diagnosed with MCI progresses to Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is not a disease. It’s a general term that describes a set of symptoms that may be caused by a number of different brain disorders. These symptoms involve mental decline severe enough to disrupt daily life that affects more than one of the following core brain functions:

  • Recent memory (the ability to learn and recall information)
  • Language (the ability to write or speak, or to understand written or spoken words)
  • Visuospatial Function (the ability to understand and use symbols, maps, etc. and the ability to correctly judge where objects are)
  • Executive function (the ability to plan, reason, solve problems and focus on a task)”

You may ask yourself: Will I get dementia? Is my forgetfulness a sign that I’ll be diagnosed with dementia when I’m older?

No, not necessarily. There are certain factors that increase your risks as you age. If you’re aware of those things and make some lifestyle changes, you should be well on your way to living a long and happy life!

Get Started Today: Schedule a Tour!

What is "The Longest Day”?

The Longest Day on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, is all about bringing people together to support a common goal: the fight against Alzheimer’s. It’s the celebration of the year!

We help raise funds and awareness for research while doing activities you can enjoy. You can honor a caregiver, someone living with Alzheimer's, or someone you’ve lost by selecting his or her favorite hobby and doing it from sunrise to sunset.

Do you know someone fighting the disease?

Are you at risk?

Are you noticing symptoms?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “The Longest Day is all about love. Love for all those affected by Alzheimer's disease. On the summer solstice, team up with the Alzheimer’s Association and select any activity you love — or an activity loved by those affected — to help end Alzheimer’s. Together, we will raise funds and awareness for care and support while advancing research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.”

Thousands contribute to The Longest Day activities on the longest night December 21, and the longest day, June 21. Last year, over 10,000 people from nine countries participated in 3,200 Longest Day tributes and $3.8 million was raised for the Alzheimer’s Association. That’s incredible!

“What motivates us year to year is the fact that the Alzheimer's disease is now more than ever not just an "Old Person" disease. People of all ages are being affected by Alzheimer's. There is still no prevention, no cure, and not enough funds and research to provide us with a possible cure. We live and breathe this disease everyday here at Hillside Terrace. Our mission this year is to raise as much awareness as possible at our "Longest Day" to the youth and to the community,” says Trey Litz, Director of Community Relations.

This year we’re partnering with Bumpin' Bubbles and giving people and businesses in the area a chance to sponsor an hour of team building skills while playing Bubble Soccer. The orchard will be set up like a real soccer field with bleachers for fans, food & drinks, silent auctions, live DJ, Cardio Drumming, NuStepping, Zumba, Yoga, and even Jon Falk from the UM Athletic Department will be there handing out and signing his books!

For more information on how you can donate to the Hillside Terrace team visit The Alzheimer's Association's The Longest Day page.

All donations help provide care and support to all those facing Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association also helps drive new research studies toward new treatment, prevention and ultimately, a cure. Donate today!

How to Deal With Personality Changes in Seniors

Does someone you know suffer from Dementia or Alzheimer’s?

Does your loved one feel like a stranger?

Are you struggling with ways to cope with these changes in your loved ones’ personality?

According to A Place For Mom, “although this can be a difficult situation to deal with, it helps to remember that this is not something you are causing in your loved one, rather, that the behavior is the direct result of the health condition.” Please know that nothing you did made them this way.

Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) suggests that “when your loved one exhibits an undesirable behavior, your reaction may be to try to stop or change the behavior. But remember, you can't reason with or teach new skills to a person with dementia. Instead, try to decrease the intensity or frequency of the behavior. Consider these approaches:
  • Remember that your loved one isn't acting this way on purpose. Try not to get angry or upset or take it personally.
  • Speak calmly and softly to the person.
  • If the behavior is aggressive, back away. Give your loved one space. Then calmly approach him or her. Don't argue.
  • Consider the potential cause of the behavior. Is your loved one tired, hungry, in pain, frustrated, lonely, bored? Could it be a side effect of medication?
  • Respond to the emotion, not the behavior. If your loved one keeps asking about a certain family member, he or she may need reassurance that this person is healthy and safe. Avoid trying to reason with the patient, this may often lead to frustration for both of you, because he or she may be unable to follow lengthy explanations.”
Are you still having problems dealing with personality changes in your loved one? At Hillside Terrace, we understand that it can be a challenging time and we want to help you in any way we can to make things easier. We’re focused on holistically improving and maintaining the well-being of our residents through promoting independence, a stimulating environment, and building rapport.

Ways to Help Seniors Avoid Isolation

Are you or a loved one isolated from other people?

Do you or a loved one get social anxiety?

Do you prefer to be by yourself?

According to a study conducted by the Drexel University of Public Health, “seniors living in areas with greater social capital had significantly higher physical mobility scores than those living in lower social capital neighborhoods. Living in a place with greater social capital—where there is more trust and more helpful neighbors—you will feel more comfortable walking around to get to places you need to go, which helps you stay mobile,” and less isolated.

If your parent or loved one doesn’t live in an area with social capital, then it is important to encourage them in certain ways to get involved in something they enjoy doing to promote social health.

A Place for Mom suggests the top ways to promote connectedness and social health include:
    elderly care Ann Arbor
  1. Making transportation available
  2. Promote sense of purpose or hobbies that interest them
  3. Encourage religious seniors to maintain attendance at their places of worship
  4. Give a senior something to take care of
  5. Encourage a positive body image
  6. Encourage hearing and vision tests
  7. Make adaptive technologies available
  8. Notify neighbors of your loved one’s condition so they can keep a friendly eye out in case anything seems amiss
  9. Encourage dining with others
  10. Address incontinence issues
  11. Give a hug
  12. Giving extra support to seniors who have recently lost a spouse
  13. Identification of socially isolated seniors by public health professionals
  14. Help out a caregiver in your life
Have you or a loved one overcome isolation? Please let us know your story and what helped you! We’d LOVE to hear your story!

Does your parent suffer from any medical conditions where safety is a major concern for their well-being?

Are you looking for ways to improve their safety at home?
senior living services Ann Arbor

According to A Place For Mom, there are some simple areas to focus on to make your home safer for your elderly parent, like:
1.    Let the light in-Install motion sensor lighting throughout their home where extra light is needed.
2.    Easy access to doors and window for seniors with arthritis-A lever style door handle may be easier to use than a round one.
3.    Restrict access to doors, windows and dangerous zone for seniors with dementia-child-locks and other child proofing products work well for this purpose.
4.    Assist with mobility- Remove tripping hazards like rugs (and if you have small children, keep the ground as toy-free as possible or establish a senior-free toy zone.)
5.    Make it easy to call for help-Consider using a call-assist service or personal emergency response system like Life Alert that your parent can wear around their neck or wrist and push a button should they need help.

8 Ways to Prevent Medication Mistakes by Being Proactive with Your Parents’ Care!

Do your parents take multiple prescription drugs?

Are your parents able to remember when to take their medications?

Are your parents forgetful?

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), “Nearly one-third of adults take five or more different medications. Given the volume of medications being taken, medication-related injuries may seem inevitable; however, injuries due to errors in medication prescribing, dispensing and administration are preventable.”
senior care center ann arbor

Taking medications properly is important to the health and well-being of your parent. If prescription drugs are not taken as prescribed by your parents’ doctors, they could suffer from complications.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services advises that the best way you can help to prevent errors is to be an active member of your parents’ health care team by doing the following:

1.    Making sure that your parents’ doctors know about every medicine they’re taking.
2.    Bringing all of their medicine and supplements to their doctor appointments.
3.    Asking for more information on your parents’ medicines in terms you can understand.
4.    Making sure their doctor is aware of their allergies.
5.    If you have questions about the directions on your parents’ medicines labels, ask!
6.    Asking for written information about the side effects your parents’ medicine could cause.
7.    Speaking up if you have questions or concerns about your parents’ care.
8.    When they’re discharged from the hospital after a surgery, ask their doctor to explain their treatment plan you should follow at home.
