Signs It May Be Time for Memory Care

Memory Care Ann Arbor

It’s painful watching your loved one lose their memory. Even harder knowing the cognitive decline of dementia often ends up stealing their independence. You want your loved ones to be happy and safe, but if they’re living with dementia, happy and safe may mean moving into a memory care facility.

Dementia looks different from person to person. Although it often progresses in a similar pattern, the extent of cognitive decline and the speed at which it progresses is unpredictable. That can make it difficult to decide when it’s time to move to memory care. Behavioral issues and compromised safety are common signs it may be time.

Visit our website for nine signs it might be time for memory care.

Alzheimer’s or “senior moments?”

Memory Care Ann Arbor

Everyone can have a bad day, but there’s a difference between a minor episode compared to frequent issues with the following:

  • Brain freeze: forgetting the rules of a game, losing your train of thought, or forgetting where you’re going are part of normal human experience, but the frequency and severity of these episodes can foreshadow a problem.
  • Confusion: forgetting an appointment is normal but forgetting the appointment location — or how to get there — can signal a warning.
  • Losing things: we’ve all misplaced our keys, but misplacing objects daily may be a concern.

Delirium vs. Dementia: Symptoms You Need to Know

memory care Ann Arbor

People with dementia and those experiencing delirium can both show signs of confusion and decreased awareness.

Whether your family member has dementia or delirium, they may have difficulty following a conversation, may not understand where they are, or may not remember important facts, such as what day it is, where they live, or their loved ones’ names.

How do you know which symptoms require a talk with your loved one’s doctor?

Delirium begins suddenly and develops quickly. Dementia begins gradually and progresses over time.

Delirium is temporary and reversible. Dementia is permanent and symptoms worsen as the disease progresses.

Read the full article about delirium vs. dementia and how a memory care facility in Ann Arbor can help!

If your loved one seems confused, talk to their doctor. There are also some other things you can do to help, including staying connected (check in with your loved one often), pay attention to changes, discuss unusual symptoms with a doctor, and lend a hand during recovery by helping your loved one with daily activities, or seek other care options, such as a memory care facility, which can offer help with meals, bathing, medication management, and more.

What’s the Difference Between Delirium and Dementia?

memory care Ann Arbor

A loved one being confused can be a very challenging experience for you and your family. As your parents get older, you’ve probably noticed that they have difficulty remembering recent events or that they sometimes show unusual behavior.

How do you know when typical elderly confusion is something more serious?

Delirium symptoms often occur suddenly, within hours or days. While delirium symptoms are usually temporary and reversible, these symptoms are also indicative of a serious, new problem that requires medical attention.

People with dementia may have problems with memory, language, thinking, problem solving, and other functions that affect daily living.

How you can help elderly adults

If your loved one seems confused, talk to their doctor. There are also some other things you can do to help, including staying connected (check in with your loved one often), pay attention to changes, discuss unusual symptoms with a doctor, and lend a hand during recovery by helping your loved one with daily activities, or seek other care options, such as a memory care facility, which can offer help with meals, bathing, medication management, and more.

4 Easy Ways to Help a Senior Manage Medication

independent living ann arborIs managing your medication becoming more important for independent living in Ann Arbor? Are you finding your growing list of medications harder to keep track of? Need a simple solution to help a loved one manage medications in their senior years?

As we age, many of us find that managing medications is an essential part of our daily routine. Often if a senior person is not able to manage their medications, it could put their life at risk and limit their ability to live independently. Luckily the experts at Hillside Terrace have 4 easy ways to help seniors manage medications.
  1. Organizers: pill organizers are an essential tool for anyone managing multiple medications. You can find an organizer that works with your schedule, or use several simple organizers if medications need to be taken at different times throughout the day.
  2. Everything in its place: over time, supplements and medications may have taken up residence in different places throughout a home. Get everything into one convenient place so refilling organizers is fast and easy.
  3. Use the phone: if the senior has and uses a smartphone, you can easily set up an app to help them remember to take theirmeds. For someone who is less technically inclined, you can help manage meds by making a phone call or two throughout the day.
  4. Make a list: write out simple instructions in large print to put up in the same place where medications are stored. Make the list more usable by using a color-coding system with colored dots on the meds and the list! Keep extra copies of the list for family and doctor visits.

You or your loved one don’t have to feel overwhelmed by an expanding list of medications anymore! Simply by practicing one or two of these items, you’ll find managing medications is much easier and independent living in Ann Arbor is achievable! If you still have questions about managing your medications, give the experts at Hillside Terrace Senior Living a call today.

What Causes Difficult Behaviors with Dementia?

Want to know more about the reason behind difficult behaviors from your loved one with dementia and how to handle them? Feeling overwhelmed by your loved one’s aggression and confusion? Interested in memory care facilities in Ann Arbor?

Difficult behaviors caused by dementia, like aggression, present a real challenge to caregivers and family who don’t understand them. That's why it's so important to learn what causes or triggers these behaviors. When you discover the root causes, it becomes easier to address tough behaviors and even avoid them entirely, giving you more quality time with your loved one!

Main causes of difficult behavior in people with dementia.

Confusion: no matter who you are, confusion is extremely frustrating. Imagine being confused about time, place, people, and objects maybe 50% of the time. You’d feel pretty on-edge and emotional. Because confusion is a major symptom of dementia, it only makes sense that emotional outbursts come with the territory.

memory care facilities Ann Arbor
You can help someone with dementia handle their confusion in many ways. Offer to help with an activity if they seem stuck. Answer questions with short and simple responses. Or go through an old photo album that might trigger lucid memories.

Avoid confusion by steering clear of asking questions, arguing, or trying to rationalize.

Fear: daily activities can easily provoke fear in a person with dementia as it becomes more difficult to recognize people and places. This fear can cause them to lash out suddenly or refuse to do something.

You can help someone avoid fear by walking them through an activity with short, simple, statements explaining what’s happening. Be sure to speak calmly and take your time.

If someone with dementia becomes aggressive or refuses, give them space and don’t try to reason with them. In time, you’ll learn what things are most likely to trigger fear and get better at avoiding them!

Brain deterioration: with dementia, the brain goes through physical and chemical changes. Because the brain controls behavior, we can expect significant changes in behavior, too. As you consider how to interact and respond to your loved one, it helps to always keep this in mind.

Before you reply to a whacky statement, troubling accusation, or frustrating question, remember that you’re talking to someone whose brain has changed and doesn’t operate the way it once did. Take a deep breath and give yourself a minute to think before you say something. In time, you’ll develop your own rhythm and feel more comfortable talking to your loved one with dementia.

The difficult behaviors that come with dementia will always present a challenge. But by learning more about the cause of these behaviors, you can adapt and better enjoy your time together. If you want to talk more about difficult behaviors and dementia or have questions about memory care facilities in Ann Arbor, give us a call at Hillside Terrace today. Remember that at Hillside Terrace, our family shares life with yours.

How to Approach Difficult Behaviors with Dementia

memory care facilities Ann ArborAre you having a hard time handling difficult behaviors in your loved one with dementia? Don’t think your approach to difficult behaviors so far has been helpful? Feeling lost in the search for memory care facilities in Ann Arbor

Even if you’re not caring for someone full-time, coming face to face with some of the most difficult behaviors in people with dementia is a real challenge. Seeing these behaviors can be frightening, and our get reactions can make the situation even worse. But you don’t have to give up on spending time with your loved one. Just a few tips can help you feel more confident and improve the quality of the time you spend with your loved one.

6 Tips for Approaching Difficult Behaviors

  1. Keep explanations simple: it’s much easier for someone with dementia to follow along and understand a short explanation than a thorough one. Even if you feel like you’re leaving out important details, stay short. This can be useful when responding to difficult questions or demands like “I want to go home!”
  2. Don’t engage in arguments: sound judgment will take a hit at some point in the progression of dementia. But it’s best not to argue with someone who is confused or is insisting on something that seems ridiculous to you. Instead, change the topic of discussion or suggest an activity.
  3. Give space: sometimes it’s best just to remove yourself, especially in the face of aggression. As long as your loved one will be safe, give space if they become aggressive. Don’t respond with attempts to restrain or keep pushing the issue.
  4. Understand triggers: take note of what happened before a difficult a behavior, even consider keeping a log. If you notice a pattern, you can do better to avoid triggers and reduce problem behaviors.
  5. Prioritize safety: remind yourself that your safety and your loved one’s safety are the priority. That means if your dad wants to go out to lunch wearing a t-shirt, orange tie, rain boots, and fedora, you’re probably better off letting it go because it won’t affect anyone’s safety.
  6. Ask for help: always remember that you can and should ask for help when you need it. You can contact the experts at memory care facilities in Ann Arbor like Hillside Terrace with questions or to look for a new solution for your loved one’s living arrangement.

Dementia is hard on everyone. But now that you’re better equipped to handle difficult behaviors, you can focus on enjoying your time with your loved one rather than being worried about an outburst or tough question. If you want to talk more about difficult behaviors and dementia or have questions about memory care facilities in Ann Arbor, give us a call at Hillside Terrace today. Remember that at Hillside Terrace, our family shares life with yours.

  2. Awareness: with groups like the Alzheimer’s Association, national Alzheimer’s awareness month in November, and more vocal celebrities, Alzheimer’s is getting more of the awareness it deserves and needs to boost funding and research.
  3. New Research: research for Alzheimer’s is turning new corners to find a more definitive cause and treatment. Areas of research include proteins in the brain, enzymes and receptors, and inflammation and blood flow blockages. There has also been push toward prevention rather than treatment.
  4. New Medication: new medications are frequently tested for Alzheimer’s. Currently, there is some promise with a drug used to treat glaucoma and drugs used to treat high cholesterol, or statins.
  5. New Diagnosis: researchers are excited about the prospect of reliable blood and saliva tests for Alzheimer’s. Simple tests like these would make earlier diagnosis possible and benefit research efforts.
